The Poetry of Alfhild Berg Salls
When you were small it was such fun
To dress you in those baby things;
Dresses soft and sweetly frilly
To replace your angel wings.

You've had your share of bumps and scrapes
With love, I tried to soothe the hurt.
You went right out and tried again...
Your independence to assert.

Your school days were a mixed delight...
Perfection wasn't always there.
Distractions, such as games and friends
Whirled you into...everywhere.

Dear daughter, have I given you,
As you were reaching out to life,
The values that will help you most
In dealing with its storms and strife?

I want you so to be aware
That there's a greater love than mine
That will enfold and strengthen you
When you have need - in life's design.

I love you, dear; you are my joy--
And by your actions know that you
Return that love. May the years ahead
Bring much success and skies so blue
And may beauty and love encompass you!
